2023 Beer Drinking Competition Rules

Please note, this is a beer-drinking competition. As such, competitors should drink bitter – lager, cider, shandy, etc are not allowed. Each team shall have four different drinkers and each team member must drink a pint of beer in a relay format.

All team members must be bona-fide competitors in the Festival or have actively officiated in the event. All team members are to drink one pint of beer in a relay. The starting position the drinker should adopt is to stand upright with their hands by their sides until the event starts (first leg) or upon completion of the previous drinker (legs two, three and four). Upon completion of drinking the pint, the empty glass should be upturned onto the top of the head before the next drinker can start.

Competitors must wear a top/t-shirt. Judges will penalise excessive spillage or anyone “jumping the gun” and starting early.

The rules below have been designed to try and make it a fair and enjoyable competition for all. Remember it is all a bit of fun! The referee’s decision is final!

There are prizes for the winning teams in both competitions.

PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY, YOU ARE ADVISED TO RESTRICT YOUR ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION TO COMPETITION DRINKS ONLY FOR THE DURATION OF THE CONTEST

Men (Teams of four)

Round one:

This round will be timed – a maximum of four teams per heat. Heats will be drawn at random. The fastest twelve teams – will be invited into the knockout phase regardless of finishing position in their heat – and seeded one to twelve based on their time in the first round. These form the basis of the draw for the remainder of the competition. Note seeds one and two will only meet in the final.

The team recording the fastest time in Round one will be awarded the Andy Holden Memorial Award.

  • Semi-final two: winners of heat three, winner of heat four and fastest losers

All races will be timed and these times will be used to help the referee to determine the winner in the event of any close finishes.
